United States Chess Federation (USCF)Our national governing body for all things chess. In addition to keeping track of ratings and publishing the rules for competitive chess in these United States, they also put out the award-winning monthly magazine, Chess Life, which is delivered free for members.
USCF Member Services AreaIn their never-ending quest to improve customer service, the USCF has implemented a new system for posting tournament results online. This is an amazing and extremely useful resource for tournament directors and players alike. You can see crosstables of all past tournaments that have been rated, view the results and stats of individual players, pre-and-post tournament ratings, check out affiliate activity, and much more.
Ratings CalculatorThis is a tool designed to help chessplayers figure out their post-tournament rating based on their tournament results. A very useful resource for players, this site provides relatively accurate information for players who like to keep a keen eye on their ratings.
US Chess LiveUSCL is the online playground for members of the USCF. Each member is allowed to register and play 12 rated games per day online, with the option to upgrade to a Royal Membership for a fee.
Free Internet Chess ServerFICS is the place where you'll find a game anytime of day or night. It's absolutely free to play -- all you need is a computer and an internet connection. Download the software (usually WinBoard), register your "handle" or nickname, and start playing. They manage ratings for all registered users, offer lectures, and there's usually a tournament going on every night. FICS comes highly recommended.
Internet Chess ClubAt ICC you'll find just as many, if not more, players online as FICS. Many GMs, IMs and other strong players frequent their server and there's always a game to be found. It has a nice interface (BlitzIn) and offers all the same benefits as FICS. All these benefits come for a price on ICC though -- $49.00 is the going rate for a one-year membership.
