Free Internet Chess Server | | FICS is the place where you'll find a game anytime of day or night. It's absolutely free to play -- all you need is a computer and an internet connection. Download the software (usually WinBoard), register your "handle" or nickname, and start playing. They manage ratings for all registered users, offer lectures, and there's usually a tournament going on every night. FICS comes highly recommended. |
| |
Internet Chess Club | | At ICC you'll find just as many, if not more, players online as FICS. Many GMs, IMs and other strong players frequent their server and there's always a game to be found. It has a nice interface (BlitzIn) and offers all the same benefits as FICS. All these benefits come for a price on ICC though -- $49.00 is the going rate for a one-year membership. |
